Babies Basket is a deeply personal reflection on Aboriginal cultural knowledge, care and continuity across generations. Inspired by a story shared by the artist's aunty, the work recalls the discovery of a traditional woven basket hidden within the shelter of a rock wall in a sacred location. Once used by mothers to safely cradle their babies, these baskets speak to the ingenuity, resilience and profound connection Aboriginal people have with Country.
Through layered colour and expressive mark-making, Ellen McIvor honours the traditions that have been carefully preserved and passed down through generations. The painting celebrates not only the physical object itself, but the enduring strength of Aboriginal culture, its stories, and the deep respect for family, place and ancestral knowledge that continues to thrive today.
