Françoise Bergaglia Interracotta
Interracotta is the interior decoration practice of Parisian ceramist Françoise Berggalia, who transforms raw clay into objects and surfaces that celebrate material, light and geometry. Working with earthenware, stoneware and porcelain, Berggalia favours unglazed finishes that highlight the tactile qualities of clay in its most elemental form. Leaves of varying thickness are pressed, engraved, or embossed with geometric patterns, allowing light and shadow to animate each surface.
Colour emerges organically from the clay bodies themselves and is occasionally enhanced by pigments or layered with additional decorative elements. Metal leaf, fabric, paper, leather, and even straw marquetry have all been integrated into her work, extending clay’s expressive potential while maintaining a foundation in simplicity. Each object begins from an elementary shape; a disk, a triangle, a square, that can be formed, deformed, and multiplied. Through these basic modules, Berggalia creates complex compositions that transform into decorative panels, wall tiles, trays, consoles, lamps, or screens. The emphasis on composition and variation ensures that every piece is unique, capable of shifting character depending on its arrangement and context.
INTERRACOTTA functions both as a studio and as a collaborative platform. Berggalia offers hand-crafted pieces on request in custom sizes, develops new decorative models in terracotta and porcelain, and regularly partners with artists and artisans to create singular works. Her practice has been recognised across Europe:
* Berlin’s Kunstgewerbe Museum hosted her work in April 2016 during the exhibition “Auf den Kopf gestellt.”
* In 2016 she also exhibited at Paris Design Week, the Salon International des Métiers d’Art in Lens, and Tout Feu Tout Flamme at Saint-Leu-la-Forêt.
* In 2017 she participated in the JEMA exhibition “De Main de Maître” in Paris.
Through INTERRACOTTA, Françoise Berggalia continues to explore clay as both surface and structure, expanding its vocabulary beyond the vessel to become a dynamic element of contemporary interior decoration.
